ezra has grown up with the church since father aaron found him. as part of his training to be an exorcist he was sent to take religious studies at college, which ideally he would have skipped if possible. he's the kind of person who learns by doing, but for that very reason it's why samson ends up completing rites for him and why he forgets the words.
in the world of covenant exorcists belong to three churches and ezra belongs to the church of providence. we know this is the smallest and youngest church, but it's also the church that seems to value human life. in covenant you don't need to believe in god to be an exorcist--despite father aaron's hope for ezra to finally believe, he doesn't.
as someone who has seen demons. he believes and knows they exist. as someone who has felt angels. he believes and knows they exist.
but he hasn't seen or felt god.
in the end it doesn't matter too much--for an exorcist's power is strengthened by their conviction. their conviction can be anything--in ezra's case, his conviction is to protect people.

the entire process is pain, and when he begged for help to god or anyone who would hear him, angel gabriel reached out to him in a vision. he asked ezra what he wanted. ezra's first wish was to not hurt anymore, and to stop the hurt going forward. next he asked to end other people's hurt and pain -- to protect people.
in this way, his entire purpose in life is to protect people--to protect those who can't protect himself. the church of providence is unlike the other two churches as they will make things harder for themselves by not killing demons outright, as demons in contract with humans will cause the death of humans if the demon dies. ezra is very much willing to struggle and be in pain if he can save other people.
he just doesn't want to see anyone else suffer.

Description: ezra is fairly tall at 6'2". generally in his 'normal' clothes he favours plainer clothes, sticking to white or black t-shirts with jeans. he usually wears flat sneakers, and uses a shirt as a make-shift jacket when the weather is warm. he'll make an effort if going to a bar though, choosing button down shirts that he leaves half open. due to his line of work any jewellery is off the table as it could easily catch on something.
in contrast, his exorcist clothing is a tight fitting shirt with his left arm bare -- this is because when he uses his ability he has to have his skin exposed.
